Understanding Dyslexia

More Common Than You Think

Dyslexia is a neurological learning difference that primarily affects reading and language processing. It is not a problem with intelligence, vision, or effort. It is simply a different way of processing written language.

Many individuals spend years struggling without ever receiving a clear explanation. A formal evaluation changes that, providing answers, documentation, and a roadmap for support.

Common Signs

What Dyslexia Can Look Like

  • Difficulty learning the alphabet or letter names
  • Trouble sounding out unfamiliar words
  • Reading significantly below grade level
  • Slow, labored reading with frequent errors
  • Spelling that does not improve with practice
  • Avoiding reading aloud or independently
  • Strong verbal skills that contrast sharply with reading and writing

Our Evaluation

What the Assessment Examines

Our dyslexia assessments are conducted in the form of a comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation. We examine phonological processing, reading fluency, decoding skills, spelling, and related cognitive abilities to determine whether dyslexia is present and what support would be most helpful. We serve families and adults from Iowa City, Coralville, Cedar Rapids, Marion, North Liberty, Hiawatha, and across eastern Iowa.

Phonological Processing

How well you recognize and work with the sounds in words, which is the foundation of reading.

Reading and Decoding

Accuracy, fluency, and the ability to sound out unfamiliar words.

Spelling and Writing

Connecting sounds to letters consistently and expressing ideas in writing.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I get my child tested for dyslexia near Iowa City?

Hope Springs Behavioral Consultants in Coralville offers comprehensive dyslexia testing for children age seven and older. We are located at 1303 5th St., Suite 202, Coralville. We are easily accessible from Cedar Rapids, Marion, and North Liberty through telehealth as well.

Do you offer dyslexia testing in Cedar Rapids?

We are located in Coralville, Iowa, approximately 25 miles from Cedar Rapids. Many families from Cedar Rapids, Marion, and Hiawatha travel to Hope Springs for our evaluations or complete them online. We evaluate children and adults age seven and older.

How do I know if my child needs a dyslexia evaluation?

Common signs include difficulty learning to read despite instruction, slow or labored reading, spelling that does not improve with practice, and strong verbal skills that contrast sharply with reading and writing. If your child's teacher has raised concerns or your child is struggling significantly with reading, a formal evaluation can provide clarity and open the door to school accommodations.

What is the difference between a dyslexia screening and a full evaluation?

A screening is a brief check that flags possible risk. A full neuropsychological evaluation, like the one we provide, is a comprehensive assessment that can confirm or rule out a dyslexia diagnosis, identify any co-occurring conditions such as ADHD, and produce a written report with specific recommendations for school and home.

Can adults be tested for dyslexia?

Yes. Many adults reach adulthood without ever receiving a formal diagnosis. An evaluation can explain longstanding struggles with reading, writing, or spelling, and provide documentation for workplace or academic accommodations.
